Wednesday, April 13: Asylum

on Mon, 03/21/2016 - 14:09

This obsessive-compulsive photo series of my everyday life started as an Instagram project in 2012, when I moved to New York from Croatia. The images are always taken in the same manner—my forehead and eyes in the foreground, and the main subject in the background. The expression of the eyes varies in keeping with the scene behind me.

I did not know where this project would take me. It all started as an interest in observing the process of transformation. I would take photos all the time, in all places and situations.

In 2014, I applied for political asylum in the United States. This photo essay became an intimate confession about my life, and an escape from the frustration of waiting for asylum approval. Taking and posting pictures became a comfort zone from the awkward feeling of being an alien in a foreign country—of not belonging—by tapping into a vacuum where I stand still.

At the Rabbithole Gallery, I will show a selection of images—presented for the first time outside of the virtual space—as well as videos generated from the images in this series.

Tonchi Antunovic is Croatian born artist living and working in New York City.
