Sunday, April 24: Sidney Stretz's PUNCHLINES
In this installation participants will expose the comedian's most powerful tool, the punch line. Carefully crafted and timed for just the right moment, the punchline determines the fate of the comedic routine. When removed from context these short phrases can be disjointed, brash, or even irrelevant. Participants will be introduced to dozens of famous punch lines stripped from their timed context. Armed with chart paper and a large sharpie pen, the artist will script these punch lines and hand them off to participants to hang wherever they may choose in the gallery or out in public. Participants are also invited to write their own punch lines and hang their contributions wherever they may choose. Once the evening is complete, the gallery and surrounding space will be adorned with large jots of context-less phrases, questioning their ability to withstand comedic reputability without the contextual verses that classically surround them.
