Warren Space announces its second exhibition, Seahorse / Exploring Memory's House. This group exhibition features three emerging international artists working in New York City.
The Hippocampus which plays a fundamental role in memory and is common to all mammals translates as Seahorse. So called for its shape, the name is also indicative of the often ethereal 'underwater' quality of memory. The title, Seahorse / Exploring Memory's House, reflects a mutual interest in the visualization of memory itself. While working through diverse points of origin and through a variety of media, each artist investigates the underlying form of memory and its relationship to identity, reality and time.
Merav Ezer's Vacuum Memories is a series of prints of illuminated plastic molds conveying a ghost-like fragility that challenges the substantiality of the commonplace objects represented. Using recurring motifs of domesticity and clichéd femininity, Vacuum Memories envelops the relationship between memory association and identity.
Metaphysical Landscapes is Yoram Porath's site-specific study of perceived reality and its relativity to time and memory. Infused with the emotion, sensuality and timeless immediacy of a childhood nostalgia, this work tackles the notion of an 'objective' visual reality while translating the artist's own 'subjective' one.
Teodora Koleva's installation, Three-legged Chair, explores the role of the photographic medium as a device of both historical- and self-preservation. A blueprint 'house of cards' illustrating memory's own delicate architecture, this work refers to the complex fragmentation of historical identity, great and small, while spotlighting the pathos of photo albums and scrapbooks.
While the artists in the exhibition approach their subject from varied points, they arrive at a common crossroads where the work of each is complemented by the stories shared.
